PHAKAMISA teaches practical skills to those educating 0 – 6 year olds; teachers and
learners all come from impoverished communities in the area around Pinetown.
Monitors help teachers to implement classroom learning into their own situations.
HIV/AIDS is devastating poor communities, leaving thousands of children orphaned.
Care-giver groups provide spiritual and emotional support for those caring for these
children. The ‘gogos’ (grandmothers) often care for children who are not related to them.
Tholuthando is a support group for those who are HIV.positive.
Traditional crafts - Sewing and Beadwork help villagers to earn some money.
Vegetable Gardens and Cookery Classes all contribute to improving health.

THE NOTTINGHAM AND DERBY DISTRICT
The District has had links with Phakamisa (part of the outreach of Pinetown Methodist Church) since the spring of 1997. The situation then was dire ... 5 untrained women (no education for black people during apartheid) were trying to help around 100 children in 5 makeshift centres (shacks). In an attempt to prevent failure a co-ordinator (Glenda Howieson) was appointed, and as a District, we were asked to try to raise her salary for a year. Six months later, the autumn synod adopted the work as a continuing District Project. In the ensuing 11 years, £89,000 has been sent there.
At the same time the number of children needing and being helped has risen from the initial 100 to 15,000 + .........PLEASE WILL YOU HELP
Donations and/or standing orders warmly welcomed.
